Joshua Pies started selling and earning $1,600 at four years old selling key racks. At 21 years old, he owned a snow-plowing business with 35 employees at 21 years old. Eventually, he entered the video production world and established his name there.
Born with an entrepreneurial mind and a relentless spirit, Joshua had taken his entrepreneurial DNA and applied it in very interesting ways. Today, he shares some insights into producing a project and some lessons every aspiring entrepreneur should know about.
The five-step process in video production:
- Development – Batting ideas around and finding funding to fund the big ideas
- Pre-production – Spending some of that money to put people, places, and things in order to eventually go into production
- Production – This is when filming happens.
- Post-production – Editing, sound, and special effects. This is the failure of a lot of filmmakers because they don’t think about the end, they only think about the love of the game.
- Distribution – Getting people to see your film, your production, and your creation.
The Keys to Successful Entrepreneurship
- It’s okay to stink out loud because at some point you won’t. You’ll just have the joy of looking back and realizing where you were and where you’ve come to.
- Joshua recommends the book E-myth when you’re in business because it calls you out on systems and processes.
- With the advent of social media, everyone now has the market opportunity to be suppliers of content. Know who your audience is and who’s going to be buying your product while you’re developing it.
- Create a baseline sustainable income where, sometimes, you’re willing to exchange low-fare dollars for a high quantity of outputs. The more work you do, the more your work will get seen, and the more people trust you. They will like your work enough that they’ll talk about you.
- It’s better to say yes to almost everything, even if it’s really small. Find a way to make it happen for as many people as you can and make it happen well – and they will become your advertising.
Whether you’re taking baby steps or giant steps, they may still not get you to your end goal, but they will get you a lot closer. It’s a matter of having a process in place and everything else will follow.
