With U.S. midterm elections coming, it’s time to break the cycle of inertia

With U.S. midterm elections slated for the fall, I can’t help but think the two-party system is broken. Both sides are deeply entrenched. What happened to the centrist? The same political operators on the left and right are spending billions of dollars to protect their self-interest in steering the country in whatever ruinous partisan way that they want. More than anything else, our biggest barrier is inertia of people.

Never in the history of human civilization has it been easier to build a movement, and yet we find ourselves stuck in this inertia with the two-party system. But we have to find a way out of the division. It starts with demonstrating humanity, compassion and kindness. We have to stop demonizing and labeling one another and just be better listeners. We all have the same fundamental interests and basic human needs, regardless of whether we’re liberal or conservative. Everything else is just so tangential. There was something I heard recently that applies here: nature is never in a hurry, yet everything gets done.

Humanity needs to leverage new technology and tools to bring about more harmony to the world. I honestly feel like if you brought two of the most politically extreme opposites to a desert island that they would end up loving each other. All the time they spend hating or judging concerns ideals. By bringing two people into any sort of situation where they’re raw human beings, they’re going to see the humanity in each other. When you start to understand the feelings and needs behind it, everything else is just noise.
