037: The Alchemy Behind Startups with Sophie Theen

A lot of founders tend to have this excuse that since they’re leaders, they don’t have to be great managers. But just as much as you need to show excellent leadership, you also need to be a great manager for the company to be successful.

In this episode, Sophie Theen, educator, speaker, and author of The Soul of Startups, talks about the alchemy behind startups. Her focus is on shifting the cultural mentality from “me” to “we.” When you understand that you’re no longer creating a business just for yourself and that the business is going to feed so many people, you are now creating a sustainable, and hopefully a good working environment for everybody in the company.

Sophie has a degree in mechanical engineering, but she’s an expert in the HR realm, specifically around cultural aspects. She believes we have to take the emotional part of the equation by leading with good data-driven decisions.

In this episode, you will hear:

  • The difference between a manager and a leader
  • Sophie’s background and startup experience
  • How mentorship has changed his trajectory
  • What inspired her to write her book, The Soul of Startups
  • The biggest issues founders face when it comes to building a culture
  • A litmus test to assess the culture of your company
